Story Behind The Song: "Birnam Wood"
This week's dispatch comes from Danny:
Of all of his play's, Shakespeare's Macbeth has always had a particularly strange hold over me. Perhaps it was seeing Ian McKellen in the BBC's black and white movie version of the Scottish play that did it - or maybe it's the fact that Magneto I have the same birthday (!!!!!). Or, just maybe it was Theo Huxtable's own attempt to make sense of the witches' curses while Claire and Cliff worried about their son's sanity…
Either way, the phrase 'til Birnam wood do come to Dunsinane' has been etched in my mind since I was 14. As has the the angriest line of one of the greatest soliloquies ever crafted by a speaker of English: 'Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player than struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more.'
This line wormed its way into my brain last week and out came this week's Perennial, Birnam Wood.
