Jonny's Food Blog - Milkshakes and Late Night and Early Morning Eating in Los Angeles

Usually, I do these posts in chronological order, but I have to talk about the milkshakes at 101 Cafe first... There, I had two of the most interesting and delicious milkshakes I've ever had - their "Black Eye" (a black & white milkshake with a shot of espresso and ground coffee beans) and the "Nut N' Honey" (vanilla ice cream with peanut butter and honey) - the only photo I have doesn't do them justice but you have to trust me,… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Dim Sum in San Francisco - Ton Khiang

After a long drive from Portland and a great show at Slim's we didn't get that much of a chance to enjoy all the tastes of San Francisco, but I was able to squeeze in a quick stop at my favorite dim sum place, Ton Khiang, for some dumplings and egg custard rice cakes to go.

My cousins Mo and Jason turned me onto this place when I came out to visit for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Portland's Voodoo Doughnuts and The Doug Fir Lounge

I love Portland... AND Bacon-Maple Doughnuts!!!

Seriously, my favorite city of the tour so far - go to Portland! And not just because of the doughnuts - I'm loving everything about the city...

Ok - back to doughnuts - Portland's Legendary, Voodoo Doughnuts, lived up to all of the Food network/Travel Channel/Guidebook/Word of Mouth hype... Besides the incredible bacon-maple bar above, I also chomped on a Old Dirty Bastard -… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Soba, Sweet Italians, and the Five Points Cafe in Seattle

After rolling into Seattle, we had a little time to grab a bite to eat after checking out our friend Kimberley's art studio outside of town (which was amazing!) I booked down the street looking for a Vietnamese restaurant which didn't look so hot so ended up going to the Mai/Chuck and venue soundman-recommended Boom Noodle. In short, I win. Buckwheat soba noodles over a spinach salad topped with smoked wild king salmon and tossed with… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Road Food From Boise to Seattle - Gas Station Bear Claws and Smoked Salmon (no, not together...)

Check out this Easter-Island-looking sweet dough masterpiece:

So we pull off to get gas somewhere in Southwest Washington to find this gas station:

Pretty standard, A&W attached to the mini-mart - you'd think there would be nothing awesome to eat here - and you would be WRONG!!! I walked in, saw this display, and kind of lost it:…

Jonny's Food Blog - Perfect Mole Sauce in Salt Lake City - The Red Iguana

You know a local place is gonna be fantastic when you hear it from all sides, and Salt Lake City's, Red Iguana definitely fits that criteria... First off, an old buddy recommended it (thank you E-Man!), then we got an email from a local (thank you Dave!), and every site I checked out raved about it. When I went saw the menu AND the fact that Los Lobos… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Denver - Tommy's Thai and Burrito Amigo

When in doubt, ask the bartender at the club... I'm learning that this really works. The good folks at the Bluebird Theater in Denver all recommended that I walk across the street to get what is known as the best Thai food in Denver - Tommy's Thai.

They weren't far off - it was awesome. I kept it simple and got some green curry with vegetables/tofu, brown rice, and a Thai iced tea.…

Jonny's Food Blog - Omaha's Big Fred's Pizza and Competitive Eating on I-80

Sam did a pretty good job describing our amazing show situation in the strip mall in Omaha, so I won't go into that, but I will send our favorite Omaha family, The D'Agosto's, a HUGE shout-out for taking care of us while in town... We love you lots...

Ok - now to the food. Omaha might not be between Chicago and New York, but their pizza definitely is... Our buddy Nick D and his family treated us to a local Husker favorite, Big Fred's Pizza. It was thick, stout, gooey, goodness with… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Boise's Best French Fries - The Idaho Fry Company

So we're driving through Idaho and I know it's cheesy, but I didn't care - I wanted French Fries and wanted them bad... After a bit of research, I found that most of the spots that seemed to be the highest rated were closed on Sunday, but I came across a new joint in Boise - The Idaho Fry Company.

It must have been destiny because their "Bourgeois" fries might be the best… Continue

Jonny's Food Blog - Jerk Chicken and Lightning in St. Louis

Ok - This is something I've always wanted to do and now is as good a time as any - so here's my food blog... I'll start it from the road, but continue once I get back to NY.

First stop - St. Louis... The first stop of our tour, we pulled into the venue "Off-Broadway" which was a bit too far from the BBQ place I wanted to check out, so I asked the bartender, Johnny, where I should go to get something awesome. He threw out a couple options but when I heard "Jerk Chicken," I was sold...… Continue
